Sunburn can spoil even a well planned summer holiday. Here are some sun safety tips that will keep you safe in the sun and enhance the fun of the vacation. Businesses that may be planning an outdoor promotion can use handouts like custom sunscreen to get their message out to their audience and engage them with their message. Though sunscreen comes to most people’s minds only when the weather heats up, it’s actually good practice to wear it year-round.
Choose Your Sunscreen Wisely
Ideally, the sunscreen you use should offer broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Exposure to UVA and UVB rays is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancers, premature aging and more.
SPF 30 or higher
Make sure your sunscreen has a sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher and the number denotes the level of protection the sunscreen offers against UVB rays. SPF 30 sunscreens filter out about 97% of UV rays. No sunscreen protects you completely. Any sunscreen with SPF below 15 can only protect you against sunburn, not UV risks or skin aging.
Water resistant feature is another big plus!
Water resistance does not mean waterproof or sweat proof. It simply means that it will last a little longer while swimming or in water. It is recommended to re-apply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and even more often if you sweat or indulge in water activities.
The sunscreen that you choose should match the skin type as well. If you have dry skin, it is better to opt for sunscreen with moisturizers and hydrating ingredients. For sensitive skin, opt for a mineral sunscreen that features zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect skin. Consult your dermatologist to hand pick the best sunscreen for your skin type.
Types of sunscreen
Sunscreen is available in various forms like lotion, spray, gels, sticks etc. Sunscreen is only effective if you use it right and when applied all over the exposed skin including face. If you have a spray sunscreen, do not spray it directly on to the face instead spray it on your hands and apply to the face with your fingers for a more even application.
Other tips to stay sun safe
Wear protective full cover clothing
When you need to be out in the sun make sure to wear full-length apparels that cover your body. Wearing UV resistant sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat will protect as much skin as possible. UV rays remain the strongest between 10 am and 3 pm during which it is recommended to limit the exposure to direct sunlight
Avoid tanning beds
Tanning beds and sunlamps may cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer. So, it is better to avoid these.
